Portage Wrestling Club Instructional Handbook

Portage Wrestling Club Information

Practices will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00-7:30 PM in the Portage Central Wrestling Room/Mini-Gym (South entrance), unless otherwise directed by the coaching staff for scrimmages, etc.

Food, drinks, gum and candy will not be permitted in the wrestling room. Only water will be allowed in the wrestling room for the athletes. Please bring your own water to every practice for quick water breaks.

Street shoes will not be allowed in the wrestling room. The shoes your child wears for practice/meets must be dedicated exclusively for wrestling only. Do not wear dedicated wrestling shoes outside for any reason. The purpose of this rule is to minimize the potential spread of skin conditions, including ringworm. Please remove street shoes upon entering the wrestling room. This rule will be enforced.

Your child is not required to wrestle in tournaments in order to participate in the Portage Wrestling Club. The coaching staff does encourage your child to compete, but only when the parent and wrestling staff believe your child is ready.

We recommend wrestling shoes and headgear for all wrestlers. Headgear is worn to prevent cauliflower ear from an accidental headbump. Headgear, wrestling shoes and a singlet are required in order to compete at tournaments. These items will be sold or able to be ordered at sign-ups. They can also be purchased online or at “most” athletic stores, such as Dunhams or the Jock Shop.

Parents: The coaches and your child need you to be involved in this learning process. Please come and stay for all practices and meets. Watch and learn as much as possible about the sport of wrestling. At the tournaments, you may need to coach your child during a match due to the number of kids wrestling at the same time. There are times when our kids wrestling outnumber the coaches we have available. We also need you available in the event your child is injured and needs medical attention. If you are not available, we will call 911 for EMS .

Our objective is to build a fun and successful wrestling club. We want this to be an enjoyable sport for you and your child. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact any member of the coaching staff.
